On Friday, February 17, 2017 the Northwestern Huskie Wrestlers competed at the WOSSAA Wrestling Championships at H.B. Beal Secondary in London. Northwestern wrestlers won eight medals and in doing so qualified five wrestlers to compete at OFSAA and the three bronze medalists go to OFSAA as alternates (in case of injury to the 1st or 2nd place finisher). Points for the overall championship were determined by the top six placings in each weight class and and advancement points by every win recorded by Northwestern. With the depth of the Huskie Team they were able to accumulate enough points to win the Overall Boys WOSSAA Championships.
Winning gold for Northwestern were Angela Steckly, Jamie Steckly and Travis Blum. Silver medals went to Tola Francis and Reeve Houle. Bronze medals were awarded to Esther Bartlett, Harrison Noble and Tyler Blum. Fourth place went to David McGrath and Ethan Gardiner. Fifth place to Carter McCue while six place awarded to Chris Steep and Bailey Read. Other athletes wrestling well for Northwestern included Maria Giannakopoulos, Andrew Staffen, Bailey Satchell, Neil Trainor, and Owen Baillie. Brett Bromley did not compete due to injury. At this time it should be mentioned that four elementary wrestlers have been training with the team this year and will soon be active Huskie wrestlers including Collin Fairburn, Carter Stock, Grant Rolleman and Xavier Olivier. Congratulations wresters and now off to OFSAA in Brampton on March 2nd and 3rd for the eight medalists.
