The Northwestern Senior Boys rugby team ended their season with a Huron Perth Silver medal this year.
In the semi finals the boys faced St. Anne’s Catholic S.S. and came out with a dominating 17-0 victory. Jon Strahan finished off an impressive rolling maul in the first half with a 40m scamper to score the first points of the game. Ben Van Den Tempel also notched a try, Daniel Bald made a conversion and the Huskies were off to the final vs. F.E. Madill.
Just as all previous meetings with the defending HP and WOSSAA champs, it was a very physical, and hard fought contest. The first half saw back and forth action, with both teams knocking on the door step but unable to score. Madill did break the Husky defence with 5 minutes left in the half, scored a try and made the conversion for a 7-0 lead. That would be all they needed as SNSS were unable to crack their defence and tie things up. Stand out players included Nic Poole, Evan James and Daniel Bald.
The Northwestern Girls rugby team finished 4th in Huron Perth. In their semi final they were matched up against perennial OFSAA qualifier St. Anne’s. The short staffed girls team played well, but ultimately lost 24-5, with Dana Pugh scoring the girls only try.
The Bronze medal game saw another hard fought game played against South Huron. In a back and forth game the girls were down early but rallied, and brought the score to within 2 scores in the 2nd half. Unfortunately that was as close as they would get. Although Jesyka Young did score a try on the final play of the game for the Huskies. Jenna Debus, Holly Entwhistle and Rachel McDougall all had strong performances.
The Jr. boys rugby team will participate in the Huron Perth tournament on Friday May 29th at SNSS, with hopes of moving on to the Barbarian Cup.
