NWSS students participated in an EatFit Project / YMCA student exchange with an Anishinaabe community in northern Manitoba; Poplar River. They visited us in early May and we have just returned from 6 exceptional days there. We learned a great deal about their culture by meeting the chief and elders, doing a sweat lodge, making traditional crafts, drumming and singing, as well as catching, cleaning and cooking fish and bannock. Students also served the community by working with younger students at the school and preparing a final meal for the elders. We made lasting friendships and now have a better understanding of the circumstances of First Nations communities and steps toward reconciliation. Thank you to Paul Finkelstein for organizing, as well as Liz Mountain and Erin Weiss-Trainor for volunteering their time and expertise.
