The Stratford Northwestern Boys hockey team got their season started with 3 games in 2 days and came out undefeated with 1 win and 2 ties.
In the season opener the boys topped Central Huron 7-4 despite being shorthanded for much of the game. The Huskies brought intensity to their first game of the year, unfortunately this led to 42 minutes in penalties throughout the game and turned what was a successful offensive effort into a close game. Sean Hood Tidman scored 2 goals in the first frame and Dalton Carde added another but Northwestern gave up 3 power play goals to their opponents and the first period ended 3-3. Northwestern took the lead in the 2nd, as Hood Tidman completed the hat trick along with last years team MVP Wes Wickenheiser’s first goal of the year. The 3rd period saw Central Huron make a game out of it, however the Huskies were able to hang on for a 7-4 win. Carde ended with 2 goals and an assist, Brayden Bach also had a 3 point game while Reilly Kehna earned his first win of the year between the pipes.
The Huskies 2nd and 3rd games of the year were both play in Clinton on the same day versus F.E. Madill and St. Anne’s. In the first game of the year the boys skated to a 2-2 tie with a strong skating and physical Madill squad. Goaltender Devon Carney made some big saves early on in the game to ignite the Huskies. Zach Ernest scored a pretty shorthanded goal on a break late in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Carney and the Huskies could not hold off Madill in the 2nd as they scored 2 unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead into the third. Northwestern showed some resolve and on some strong play from defenders Steven King and Evan James were able to keep Madill off the score sheet. With under 2 minutes remaining in the third, Brandon Taylor was rewarded for a very strong game, when he buried a backhander from the slot tying the game at 2. Carney stood strong for the rest of the game as the Huskies skated to the tie. Head coach Rob Collings was pleased with the boys effort against a strong team from Madill.
In the 2nd game of the day of the day the boys let one get away, giving up a 2 goal lead in the third leading to a 5-5 tie. Carde scored twice with Ernest, Wickenheiser and Nic Poole adding singles. Reilly Kehna played well in goal.
The boys don’t see league action again until Dec. 5th as they host F.E. Madill at RBC Arena in Stratford. Dec. 8th will see Northwestern play St. Mike’s at 1 pm at RBC Arena.
