The Huskies 7 Aside Rugby season finished on a positive note, this week as they competed in their final tournament of the fall in Goderich.
The Huskies Girls team finished the day with 2 wins and a loss. In their opening game, Dana Pugh was the only Husky to score in a 25-5 loss to rivals St. Anne’s. The girls bounced back in their 2nd match notching a 20-0 shutout over Goderich. Elissa Beckett scored 2 tries, while Ally Strausser and Holly Entwhistle each added singles. In their final game of the day the girls topped Kincardine 15-5 in a back and forth match. Sam Nafziger and Holly Bowman each had strong games in the win.
The Junior boys entered 2 teams in the tournament. The Junior 1st’s team ended the day 2 and 1. They opened the day with a convincing 30-0 win over F.E. Madill, followed by a 20-0 win over South Huron. In their final game, the Junior Huskies held a 10 point lead at half, but couldn’t hold off a surging Kincardine team as they fell 15-10 in the end. Jon Strahan, Jamie Steckly, Brayden Pines, Ricky Tate and Donnie Hammer all scored for the Huskies. The Junior 2nd’s team, made up of Grade 9 students, finished the day 0-2-1. The Junior 2nd’s tied their first game 15-15, with tries from Tola Francis, and 2 from Mark Van Dam. In their 2nd game the Huskies lost a very close match 10-5, Kross Lupsor was the only Husky to get across Madill’s goal line in this match. The boys finished the day with a 20-5 loss to host Goderich.
The Senior boys also entered a split squad in the tournament. The Senior boys 2nd’s, made up of grade 11 students, finished the day 0-3 despite a number of close games. In their first game the Sr. 2nd’s lost 15-5 to Kincardine despite dominating much of the posession and territory. New comer Omar Campbell scored his first try in the defeat. In their 2nd game the Sr’s lost 20-0 to a strong Madill team. The Huskies played a much stronger 2nd half, only giving up 1 score to the Mustangs. In their final game, the boys lost to host Goderich 15-5 in another hard fought, back and forth game. Joel Koskamp scored the Huskies lone try, other standout players included Ben Van den tempel and Drew Dotzert.
The Senior boys A squad finished the day undefeated, only allowing 15 points scored against them for the entire day. In their first game the Huskies dominated Kincardine, the final score being 40-0. Daniel Bald took over this game midway through the 1st half, scoring 5 tries, for 20 points. Derek Van den Tempel added 2 scores, and Matt Fillion added a single. In their second game vs. Goderich the Huskies impressed again. Bald, Van den Tempel and Fillion provided all the offence in a 30-10 win. In their final game the Husky Sr’s topped Madill 20-5, dominating possession for much of the game. Josh Alexander had a great try to put the game away in the 2nd half.
The Huskies will now take a few weeks off, before beginning to prepare for the much anticipated Spring 15 aside season.
