The Northwestern Senior boys and Girls rugby teams travelled to St. Anne’s C.S.S. in Clinton on May 17, 2016 to compete for their respective Huron Perth Championships.
The Senior boys finished 2nd in league play, while the girls ended up in 3rd place coming into the tournament.
The Girls drew 2nd seeded F.E. Madill in their first match. Despite a spirited effort the girls did not manage to break through the Madill defence, and could not stop the oppoistions attack. The game ended 15-0 in favour of Madill. The girls moved on to the bronze medal match where they faced rival South Huron. In a back and forth game that saw plenty of solid tackles and good ball movement, the girls came up 1 score short in a 19-12 loss. Claire Lavereaux continued her excellent rookie season scoring for the Huskies, while veteran Kim Bannon, Holly Bowman and Sam Nafziger played well also.
The senior boys team travelled to the finals with a short staffed squad due to injuries as well as other reasons. The boys dropped their first game to St. Anne’s 29-0, and fell to eventual Huron Perth Champions F.E. Madill in their 2nd game 29-7. Tade Ankenmann scored the lone try of the day with Ben VanDenTempel making the conversion. Veterans Mackinnon Hawkins, Jon Strahan and Evan James played well, while rookie Jacob MacPherson impressed in his first games at centre.
Despite the result there is promise moving forward for both squads who will boast a large number of returning players for next year. The Huskies Junior Boys rugby team finished 4th in league play, and are preparing for their Huron Perth Semi Final vs. F.E. Madill next Wed. May 25th in Clinton.
