Lauryn Baechler was the first Northwestern OFSAA qualifier on Saturday placing a close fourth (out if 16 competitors) throwing a personal best of 29.19 metres in the Midget Girls Javelin (Grade 9). She missed 3’rd place by only 16 cm and 2’nd by 2.69 metres. Beachler competes at OFSAA Track and Field on Friday, June 8 at 3:00 pm.
Makayla Roy is poised for her second straight OFSAA Track and Field appearance in the Junior girls javelin (Grade 10). Roy is no stranger to OFSAA winning a Bronze medal in the Midget Girls Javelin in 2017 as a grade 9 student (32.12 metres). In a junior Girls javelin event on Saturday featuring three of the top throwers in the nation, Roy placed a close 3’rd out of 16 competitors throwing a huge personal best of 39.55 metres (a 3 metre personal best improvement!). The winning throw was 42.00 metres, followed by 40.25 metres, followed by Makayla at 39.55 metres. This is an exceptionally strong and competitive junior girls javelin year (much stronger than we normally see in this age group) in which the junior throwers are “out-throwing” the senior girls (grade 11 and 12) throwers! To put this in perspective, even though Makayla placed third in junior, she would have won the older senior girls javelin event by 2 metres at OFSAA Regionals! The winning senior throw in the girls event was 37.56 metres by Holly Hanchiruk of Woodstock Huron Park. Makayla’s OFSAA Regional throw was also far enough to have won OFSAA Gold in Junior Girls Javelin in 2017! Makayla also placed a very close and heartbreaking fifth in the Junior Girls Shot Put where she was leading the competitions for 4 rounds, only to see four other athletes set personal best performances to pass her in the 5’th and 6’th rounds of competition. Makayla threw 12.29 metres, missing fourth and an OFSAA qualifying spot by only 6 cm. Now Makayla can narrow her focus and place her full energy to the javelin event at OFSAA. She is so excited to have another chance to take on her close competition in javelin at OFSAA Track and Field on Saturday, June 9 at 1:00 pm.
Both Baechler and Roy are medal threats at OFSAA .
